  Monday, March 31st, is the 120th anniversary of the founding of our club.

  
  

  Rob Cavanaugh will retell the Founding Story down at the club that evening and drink a toast—or several—to the club's founders and to all those who have made the club work for the last 120 years. If you'd like to join me, bring the toasting beverage of your choice. Story time is 7:30. Toasts to follow immediately.

  The story of the club's founding is an interesting one and is told in the first two entries of the first book of club meeting minutes. Of particular note is that the Fairmount Park Commission had decided to make no further repairs to the decaying building and when repairs had become necessary they would have simply razed the building, as they had already done to most of the many other mills that once operated in the Wissahickon Valley. It's no exaggeration to say that this historic old mill building still stands thanks to the efforts and work of PCC members, including all those who came out to the workday last weekend - you're part of a long legacy!!

  The forecast for rain the beginning of the week are expected to raise water levels for a trip on either the East or West Brandywine or Perkiomen Creeks.  This page will be updated by 5 PM Tuesday with the trip location on whichever creek has the best water levels.  All creeks have class 1 rapid and ripples intersperced with sectoins of moving water.  The time on the water for this 8 - 10 mile paddle is approximately 4.5 hours.   We will take a break and eat lunch along the way. The East or West Brandywine and Perkiomen Creeks are approximately 45 to 60 minutes from the Philadelphia Canoe Club.

  Participants must be American Canoe Association (ACA) members and complete an online waiver.  Uncertain if you have a waiver?  Log into the ACA Website, click “My Profile” and “Date Annual Waiver Expires”.  If it is expired or has never been done click here to complete a waiver.  Non-members are encouraged to join and complete the waiver before the trip.  The $40 membership provides insurance for club events for the next year.  The day of the trip ACA members without an annual waiver (bring your membership number) and non-members (pay $10 cash for a 1 day event membership) can complete a paper waiver.

  Requirements: 

  • Transportation of your boat and gear to the trip location.

  • Wear a PFD while on the water and you should have a whistle.

  • Dress appropriately for cool weather paddling.  There are many online sources of information on how to dress.  Click here for a link to one such online source from Paddle Boston.  Have a dry set of clothes in a waterproof bag in the boat.

  • Protect your toes, wear water or close-toed shoes.

  Suggestions (for your comfort):

  • Bring water to drink and lunch.
  • Bring a dry bag or waterproof container for your personal belongings/extra clothes.
    Have a secure place to carry your car keys.
  • Have a set of dry clothes in your car if you want to change for the ride home.

  After a 2 year hiatus, United By Blue is coming back and coordinating a massive cleanup at the Tacony Creek Park.

   It will be Saturday April 5th from 9am - 3pm

  Please use this LINK to for FULL event information and to register in advance! 

  We will come together to help preserve the health and beauty of Tacony Creek Park by tackling one of the largest illegal dumpsites in Philadelphia. Volunteers will remove illegally dumped tires as well as clear debris from surrounding streets. Being comfortable with lifting heavy objects up to 50 pounds is desirable for this cleanup event. There will also be an opportunity to collect lighter litter around the dumpsite with grabbers.

  The Oswego is one of the prettiest pine barren's streams. The initial miles twist and turn through a white cedar forest.  Then the Oswego spreads out into a marshy, multi-channeled, pond-like expanse.  Paddle the last mile through Harrisville Pond to the takeout.  The time on the water for this 6.2 mile paddle is approximately 4.5 hours.  We will take a break and eat lunch along the way.  The Oswego River is approximately 90 minutes from the Philadelphia Canoe Club.

  Take Out: Harrisville Pond , Chatsworth Rd, Chatsworth, NJ.  Coordinates: 39.665778381454686, -74.52434183590599.  At the end of the trip, we will use the vehicles left at Harrisville Pond to take drivers back to Oswego Lake to get their vehicles and get everybody and their boats back together.

  Do you love to be out on the water and want to try a paddle-sport but do not where to start? This class offers an overview of information on canoes, kayaks, and stand up paddle boards on flat, moving, and whitewater.

  This class does not replace the need for on-water skills instruction but will help decide what paddle-sport(s) you want to focus on and prepare you to get to the water. Our instructors will also help you identify the PCC Training Classes you might want to enroll in to build your paddling skills this summer.

  Basic canoe instruction for the beginner on flatwater to prepare you for future classes. 

  This class will focus on entering and exiting the canoe, basic strokes to control the boat and necessary gear.

  INTRODUCTION TO FLATWATER CANOES and PADDLING TECHNIQUES

  The canoe is an ancient, graceful craft that is a pure pleasure to paddle. Learn to enjoy the serenity of canoeing.
  

  May 17 & 18, 2025

  Location: Wissahickon Creek at PCC

  Time: Saturday: 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Sunday 9 am to 3 pm.

  No Experience necessary but you must be able to kneel  in a canoe. Bring a comfortable, non-slip, kneeling mat or wear knee pads. This class is designed to allow students to learn in a relaxed atmosphere. Bring a lunch, snacks, drinking water in plastic, and a change of clothes.

  This course will cover a brief history of canoes from early dugouts to today's modern designs. We will discuss how design and styles contribute to performance. We will also discuss how paddle design and construction adds to smooth, effortless strokes.

  You will learn how to control the behavior of the canoe.  Learn how "heeling" the canoe can add to enhanced performance.  Some Freestyle Canoeing techniques will be introduced.

  (No prior experience necessary). 
  

  (Conducted next to PCC on the Wissahickon Creek).

  Note: Kneeling required to fit into the canoe.

  Interested in whitewater canoes? Never sat in one? This class provides an opportunity to learn about whitewater canoes  and experience how they feel on the water. We will fit you into a ww canoe, provide gear and show you basic strokes. The class will cover parts of the boat and the type of equipment used in whitewater. You will learn why they are different from flat water canoes. 

  Be prepared to get wet. Protect your feet, especially your toes, wear secure footwear. Closed water shoes or sneakers a must, no sandals, flip flops or crocs. 

  Attendance is limited. If you need to cancel please let me know so another person may attend. Thank you.

  Meet on Summer Thursday evenings at 5:30pm - (estimating) 7:30pm to paddle recreational kayaks out of the Philadelphia Canoe Club.

  We ask you arrive 15 minutes early for a pre-paddle prep.

  Club membership is not required and boats and equipment will be available at the Canoe Club! 

  These paddles are a great opportunity to learn more about kayaking with PCC and explore the river.

  May 30, 31, June 1, 7 & 8, 2025

  No experience necessary:

  This course is held over a period of two weekends. You may choose solo or tandem canoe. You will be introduced to proper fit and use of equipment, strokes, maneuvers, assisted and self rescue, river features, water reading, and safety while building skills to paddle class two whitewater.

  The first weekend will begin on still water and move into beginning rapids. The second weekend will be held on the Lehigh River in the Poconos. Tent camping only is included for Friday and Saturday nights at Whitewater Challengers Friday and Saturday nights (June 6 & 7). Dinner will be provided Saturday evening, June 7 in the pavilion.  Please: No RV's.

  Evening Session, May 30, is a mandatory orientation which includes meeting your instructors, logistics for the class and equipment and canoe fitting. If you plan to use your own boat for the class please bring it Friday Evening.

  
  

  Class preparation: You will need closed toe, tight fitting, shoes (sneakers or river booties). Dress to be wet, bring two changes of clothes (no cotton) on the day of the class. A dry bag to bring extra clothes (such as fleece sweater, paddle jacket) with you in the boat. You will receive further instructions closer to the class with a list of things to bring for your comfort.

  Full Course Cost:

  The first two-day weekend is held in Philadelphia on the Schuylkill River followed by two days on the Lehigh River in the Poconos. Tent camping at Whitewater Challengers in the Poconos is included for Friday and Saturday nights (June 6 & 7). A dinner will be provided at the campground on Saturday evening, June 7 in the pavillion.

  Please note: NO RV's permitted in the campground.

  Successful completion of this course will allow students to participate in Philadelphia Canoe Club’s (PCC) Wednesday Night Flat Rock Trips on the Schuylkill River.

  WHITEWATER KAYAKING Not-So-Novice TRAINING 

  May 30th (Friday Evening, 5:30 p.m.)

  Weekend 1 - May 31st and June 1st

  Weekend 2  - June 7th & 8th, 2025

  This class is part of the Philadelphia Canoe Club (PCC) Whitewater Kayaking Novice Training Class. It is designed as a step-up class for students who have taken novice training or have whitewater skills and experience; and wish to improve.

  Prerequisites: 

  • You must be comfortable on class II Whitewater (like the Lehigh River) and have taken the PCC Novice Training course or equivalent. 
  • You must be able to perform the basic paddling skills taught in a novice course. You should be comfortable underwater while performing wet exits and familiar with "J" leans, hip snaps and braces.

  Venue: Schuylkill River, Lehigh River, or appropriate river to be determined by instructor.

  Note:  You may take the first weekend only.

  Lehigh Weekend: Tent camping only at Whitewater Challengers in the Poconos is included for Friday and Saturday nights (June 6 & 7). A dinner will be provided at the campground on Saturday evening, June 7 in the pavillion.

  Recreational Kayak Clinic #1 - June 5, 2025

  Basic River Kayak Paddling Strokes and Boat Control

  Laura Lipkin - Lead Instructor

  This clinic will address both proper recreational kayak seating position and stroke form for good ergonomics, efficient paddling, and preserved stamina on the river. We will work on a solid forward stroke to power the kayak and a reliable backward stroke for slowing down, navigating moving water in twisty streams, and stopping the boat.   No experience necessary. This course is designed for students with little or no formal kayak training.

  Please note: be prepared to get wet, you will be in the water for some of the safety exercises.

  No experience necessary. This course will introduce you to equipment, safety and boat handling. Class will be conducted on flatwater Saturday and a gentle river on Sunday. You may take just the first day but you can not skip the first day and attend the second day only.

  Instruction is offered solo (1 person in a canoe) or tandem (2 people in a canoe). The class will begin Saturday morning at 8:30 a.m. at the Philadelphia Canoe Club, 4900 Ridge Avenue, Philadelphia. Class will be conducted on the creek next to the Philadelphia Canoe Club on Saturday. On Sunday we will travel to a lake (to be determined) in the NJ Pine Barrens (about 1 hour drive from Philadelphia).  Instructors will carry the boats and equipment but will not provide rides.

  You may take just the first day only.

  Note: For your comfort, bring a kneeling mat or wear knee pads.

  Front & Back Ferries, Intro to Eddy Turns 

  (Includes paddling backward using a reverse "J" stroke).

  Ferrying is used to easily and quickly move from one side of the river to the other while avoiding obstacles (rocks, trees, other boaters or from being swept downstream). You can ferry facing downstream (back ferry) or facing upstream (front ferry). Back ferries are especially important in canoes because of their size. It's not necessary to turn the boat against the upstream current risking a capsize, just angle the boat a bit and paddle backward to avoid a problem.  Knowing a good back stroke is essential for back ferries. We will practice paddling backward using a reverse "J".

  Eddies are calm areas formed by an obstruction in the moving water such as a rock or some other solid object. They are helpful places to rest, scout or decide how to maneuver around an problem spot downstream. We will examine "eddie lines" and how to successfully turn into one. We will also learn to "peel out" which is how an eddy is exited.

  You may use either a whitewater or flat water canoe. Tandem students must provide their own partner who is a registered student in the course.

  Please bring a change of clothes. No sandals or open toes.

  Prerequisite: Prior experience in whitewater canoes required. 

  Class will be conducted in whitewater canoes (Solo or Tandem) on the Schuylkill River at Flatrock rapids (class 1-2 whitewater). 

  The goal of this class is to learn to good river judgement and to navigate whitewater safely and efficiently.  You will practice improving your ferries, peel outs, water reading, scouting and portaging. Most rivers have flat sections and whitewater sections. You will learn when to stop, scout and safely navigate or portage a section you do not wish to run.

  You may use either a whitewater or flat water canoe. Tandem students must provide their own partner who is a registered student in the course.

  Class will be held on the Schuylkill River at the club.  The clinic will cover basic rescue techniques that every canoeist should know for personal and group safety. You will learn how to rescue a capsized canoe and assist paddlers with their re-entry into the boat.  You will also learn to use throw bags. (Bring your throw bag if you have one). 

  Be prepared to get wet, you will be in the water. Protect your feet, especially your toes, wear secure footwear. Closed water shoes or sneakers a must, no sandals, flip flops or crocs. Helmets required, the club will provide them if you don't have one.

  Preparing to Kayak in Faster Water

  Jere Downs – Lead Instructor

  This clinic will help the recreational kayak paddler begin to develop good river judgement about navigating faster moving water safely and effectively.  The clinic will include discussion of how checking water levels, flow speeds, and tides is vital in assessing risks of paddling moving water. Participants will also begin to learn about reading moving water for hazards and challenges and making thoughtful decisions about waters you can safely navigate and which you should portage around. If water conditions on the river permit, there may be some practice of paddling techniques used in faster water: eddy turns, peel outs, and bracing.

  
  Participants must be in good physical condition and good swimmers. This also means you are able to carry a 60-pound boat with the assistance of another paddler for 100 yards on rocky terrain. Participants must also be able to kneel and enter a boat unassisted at a dock and on the riverbank. Knowledge of how to “wet exit” or swim to shore upon capsizing will be covered in the course.

  Topic: The pleasure of river kayaking has to be combined with an awareness of potential risks associated with it. This clinic will focus on some of the safety and rescue concerns for recreational kayaking and techniques to address them.  Water hazards, wading techniques, assisted re-entry into kayaks, and kayak towing will be addressed as time permits.
