The Philadelphia Canoe Club is organizing a clean up of the Schuylkill river with the Philadelphia Water Department.
We will be focusing our efforts near the Flat Rock Sluice house.
Knowing we all enjoy the convenience of the Schuylkill River, it is time to give back for just a couple hours. We are teaming up with the Philadelphia Water Department to remove large pockets of trash deposited along the Schuylkill River Trail. Primary focus is on the area around Lock 68 & Manayunk Canal Sluice House.
The Paper Mill has agreed to allow us access to their parking lot near our cleanup site. We are asking Canoe Club Members to arrive at the Club by 8:00 am on October 19th.We will then carpool to the Paper Mill parking area. Non-PCC Members may report directly to the Paper Mill Parking at 8:30 am.
We are requesting this to minimize the amount of traffic on the Paper Mill’s property, and to remain respectful to the Paper Mill’s concerns of liability. Meeting at the Clubhouse also will allow us to get organized prior to going to the cleanup site.
Once loaded up we will make our way to the Paper Mill’s guard house and check in before proceeding to the parking area. The Paper Mill is an abandoned industrial site. For those that are driving please proceed with caution and look for directional signs upon entering. The road is rough and somewhat hazardous in parts.
We will gather in the parking area for a brief overview and safety talk before heading through the trail that leads to the cleanup area.
We also have a rain date of Nov. 2nd. The area becomes inaccessible with too much rain. This will be a land based cleanup. No boats necessary. The area is not large, but yet still densely packed with trash. Your help will be appreciated !!
The Water Department will be providing us a long list of tools for this job, as well as all trash removal at the end. Look for that list along with items you will need to bring with you in upcoming emails and facebook posts.
Afterwards, lunch will be provided back at the Club House.
Thank you, and truly looking forward to making this happen !
