The Toms River is located at the northern limits of the Pine Barrens with slightly different scenery than the waterways to the south.  The initial miles are a narrow channel, just 1 to 2 boats wide, with many twists and turns and a swift current.  Kayaks 13’ or less are recommended.  Good boat control is necessary to maneuver around obstacles and the sharp twists and turns in the upper section of the river.  Removal of debris is done by anyone who paddles the river.  Club members who recently paddled the Toms reported new deadfall in the initial miles that needs to be cleared.  So this is an opportunity to give back by either bringing a handsaw, loppers or clippers to help with the clearing or just be there while others clear a passage through the debris.  The Toms gradually widens, and latter miles are a cruise around wide curves and spread-out deadfall.  Other than a short stretch of homes and some development dense woods border the river.  The time on the water for this 7.2 mile paddle and clearing some debris is approximately 5.5 hours.  We will take a break and eat lunch along the way.  The Toms River is approximately 95 minutes from the Philadelphia Canoe Club.
