The Toms River is located at the northern limits of the Pine Barrens with slightly different scenery than the waterways to the south.  The initial miles are a narrow channel, just 1 to 2 boats wide, with many twists and turns and a swift current.  A channel has been cut out but at times requires sharp turns and passage through slots just 1 boat wide.  No outfitter operates on this river so deadfall is possible. Optionally bring a hand saw or clippers to clear debris.  We may need to portage around large fallen trees across the river.  The Toms gradually widens, and latter miles are a cruise around wide curves and spread-out deadfall.  Other than a short stretch of homes and some development a dense woods boarders the river.  The time on the water for this 7.2 mile paddle is approximately 4.5 hours.  We will take a break and eat lunch along the way. The Toms River is approximately 95 minutes from the Philadelphia Canoe Club.
