PCC Training Programs for 2009
& Scholarship Info

Training Scholarships for Students: The first annual Dale V. Herrick Memorial Scholarship will be awarded this year. Up to two students may be eligible for half-price training scholarships.

To Apply: Send a brief statement of why you feel you deserve a scholarship, to Dana Fry at danafry@gmail.com. Consideration will be given to financial need, paddling enthusiasm, and contributions to PCC and the larger boating community. Please be specific, and keep it short - not more than half a page. Bullet points are preferable.

The Philadelphia Canoe Club offers introductory instruction in both canoe and kayak,
for flatwater (calm lakes and streams),  whitewater, and ocean paddling.

No prior experience is required for participation in any of our introductory courses. 
All Philadelphia Canoe Club training courses are led by American Canoe Association certified instructors. Philadelphia Canoe Club courses follow the American Canoe Association guidelines and curricula for safety and training.

Rules for all Courses of Instruction
  1. All participants must sign an American Canoe Association (ACA) waiver (read in PDF format).
  2. Children must be 12 years of age.
  3. Children ages 12 through 17 must be accompanied by a paddling parent or guardian.

Flat and Moving Water Canoe

INTRODUCTION TO CANOEING

Prerequisite: None
Time: One day

This course is designed for students with little or no formal canoe training or experience. Lessons are conducted on flat and slow moving water. Topics include basic strokes, maneuvers, self and assisted rescue and safety. Solo or tandem canoe training is available. Training will be take place on the Schuylkill River. To ensure we have the proper complement of instructors and equipment, reservations and payment must be received 5 days in advance of the course date. MOVING WATER CANOE

Prerequisite: Successful completion of "Introduction to Canoeing" within the same canoeing season.
Time: One day

This course will build on the topics covered in "Introduction to Canoeing." After a quick review we will work on basic river maneuvers on flat and moving water up to class I. Also covered will be self and assisted rescue and safety as it pertains to whitewater. Solo or tandem canoe training is available. Training will be take place on the Schuylkill River. To ensure we have the proper complement of instructors and equipment, reservations and payment must be received 5 days in advance of the course date. INTRODUCTION TO FLATWATER CANOEING -- PINE BARRENS RIVERS

Wednesday July 29 (7-10pm at PCC Clubhouse), and Aug 1-2, 2009 (On the Water) Details and application in PDF format

These courses are designed for students who have never taken formal canoe training. Lessons will include basic strokes and safety. An evening classroom session precedes our on-the-water lessons. To ensure your safety, attendance at each session is required. Training will be conducted in the Pine Barrens of New Jersey. Tandem training is available. Solo training may be available as space permits. Reservations and payment must be received 5 days in advance of the course date.

Recreational,Touring, and Sea Kayak

INTRODUCTION TO FLATWATER KAYAK

This course is designed for students with little or no formal kayak training. Lessons will include basic strokes, safety and rescue on flat moving water. Training will be conducted on the Schuylkill River. Reservations and payment must be received 5 days in advance of the course date.

INTRODUCTION TO RECREATIONAL KAYAK

This course is designed for beginning paddlers who use or plan to use recreational kayaks. The class will provide general information on kayaking and teach sufficient skills to handle a kayak safely in quiet, protected waters and small streams.  Lessons will be conducted on the Wading River and Pine Barrens in New Jersey. The lessons will include basic kayak strokes, launching and landing boats and practices for safe paddling. Reservations and payment must be received 5 days in advance of the course date. NOVICE RIVER WHITEWATER CANOE TRAINING

The Novice Whitewater Canoe course is suitable for anyone from beginners to advanced novices. This intensive course starts with an evening classroom session and is followed by four full days on two concurrent weekends. The course is intended to progress paddlers from flat moving water up to Class 2+ whitewater in a skillful and safe manner. To ensure your safety, attendance at each session is required; no exceptions will be allowed. Successful completion of this course will allow students to participate in future Class 2+ Club trips. Lessons will include ferries, eddy turns, peel outs, river reading, self and assisted rescues and river safety. Solo or tandem canoe training is available. Training will be conducted on appropriate local rivers (Schuylkill, Delaware, Lehigh, and Pine Barrens rivers); the exact rivers will be determined at the 1st session depending on local conditions. NOVICE TRAINING FOR WHITEWATER KAYAK

These one-day courses are designed for students with little or no formal kayak training. Lessons include basic strokes, maneuvers, assisted and self-rescue, river reading and safety. It is a basic introductory course intended to introduce students to the essentials of whitewater river kayaking. Successful completion of this course will allow students to participate in PCC's Thursday night Flatrock Trips on the Schuylkill River if qualified. Reservations and payment must be received 5 days in advance of the course date.

DAVE JACKSON NESCOPECK TRAINING CAMP

Intermediate Whitewater Training, Canoe and Kayak

April 18-19, 2009


This course is for advanced novice and intermediate paddlers. It is designed to tune up and improve your river paddling skills. Students must be able to competently execute wet exits, ferries, eddy turns and peel outs on Class II water. Students must have paddling experience on whitewater rivers such as the Lehigh and Schuylkill Rivers. Students must have appropriate cold weather paddling gear. Rolling Sessions-Indoor

INDOOR TRAINING - Winter of 2008

Winter indoor kayak rolling training (click for details) is conducted from November through March.
Winter indoor "Rodeo Skills in the Pool" may be held on some Saturday nights.

Wednesday Night Flat Rock Whitewater Practice
June through August

PCC offers whitewater practice sessions on the Schuylkill River on Wednesday evenings in the summer. 
Meet at PCC between 5:00 and 5:30 p.m.  
An insurance fee of $5 is required from each participant for each session, unless you provide your ACA membership number prior to each session. 
Club boats are available to rent, $10 per trip. 

To participate, a paddler must have successfully completed the PCC Novice Whitewater Training in Kayak or Canoe, or a PCC One Day Introduction to Whitewater Kayak Class.

Thursday Night Flatwater Practice
June through August

 
PCC offers flatwater practice sessions on the Schuylkill River on Thursday evenings in the summer. 

Meet at PCC between 5:00 and 5:30 p.m.
An insurance fee of $5 is required from each participant for each session, unless you provide your ACA membership number prior to each session. 
Club boats are available to rent, $10 per trip. 

To participate, a paddler must have successfully complete a beginner kayaking or canoeing course. 

The practice run goes upstream and back in time for a potluck supper.

Safety and Rescue

RIVER RESCUE & SAFETY FOR KAYAK & CANOE

Lessons include rescue philosophy, river hazard assessment, self-rescue skills, accessing techniques (wading, swimming, etc.), ropes and mechanical advantage exercises. RIVER RESCUE & SAFETY REFRESHER

This is a one-day refresher course in river rescue skills.  The curriculum will be “student-driven,” in that the instructor will ask students which skills they’d like to review and try to meet students’ needs where possible.

PCC Annual Open House

Sunday, July 12,   10:00 AM - 4:00 PM.

The Philadelphia Canoe Club (PCC) opens its doors to the public for a day of free demonstrations, canoe and kayak rides, used equipment sales, racing, music, food and entertainment, right on the bank of the Schuylkill River.


Whitewater and Flatwater Equipment Rental


PCC has a limited supply of whitewater and flatwater boating equipment available to rent for use by students in our training programs, on a first come-first served basis. Please review the detailed course descriptions and applications for more information on specific equipment rentals.
